Snow or no Snow – we still have lots going on! Don’t forget about the Photo Contest! Entries must be a picture of a past Beargrease Race. Deadline for entries is March 31, 2012. Go to “Photo Contest” under “Get Involved”, for more information.
After long deliberation, The John Beargrease Board of Directors is regretfully announcing the cancellation of the 2012 Race.
With the safety of mushers, dogs and the many volunteers which is the number one concern of the Board, lack of snow and poor trail conditions prohibit the running of a safe race.
The Beargrease Board and members would like to thank its many sponsors, volunteers and mushers for their continued support of the race. As of this time, the race had a fantastic field of racers who will be back next year to compete on the north shore trail.
While the race will not be running, the other race week events will continue. On Friday, January 27th, 6:00 p.m. we will host the Gala and Silent Auction event at the Greysolon Ballroom in the Moorish Room. Then, come on out for the ever popular “Cutest Puppy Contest” on Saturday, January 28th 11:00 a.m. at Fitger’s Brewery Complex.
The Beargrease Board would like to thank the community of Duluth and the entire North Shore for their support of this premier winter event.

Go to the link under mushers and click on registration. The rules for both the Marathon and Mid-Distance are posted with the changes highlighted. They are on the right hand side of the page.
Along with the annual running of the 375-mile marathon and 125 mile mid distance race there is a new race for juniors. The inaugural running of the “Little John” for mushers between the ages of 14 and 17 will be held this January. Junior mushers entered in the race will also be full racers in the 8 dog mid distance race; their race will be a race within a race. Junior racers will be competing not only against the full field of racers but also for their own prizes and awards. “This new race is a great way to get young people involved in the sport and it is hoped to become as well received as the Junior Iditarod” Says Geoff Vukelich race president. There are still sponsorship opportunities for the Little John.
The Beargrease will be starting from the same location as last year, near Jean Duluth and Riley Road. This location has been a success with thousands of people showing up to the start and hundreds more along the trail. Recently revitalized, the race is seeing an increase in the competition and consequently coverage and attention as well.
Registration for the 2012 John Beargrease Sled Dog race will open at noon on August 6, 2011. Race coordinator, Pat Olson, says that spaces often fill up quickly so mark the date on your calendar mushers.
