A tradition in dogsled racing is to award the last team to cross the finish line a red lantern. This tradition stems from a time when mushers and their team were utilized regularly for delivery of mail and other goods. It was common practice in these times for Roadhouses and stations to leave a red lantern burning to indicate there was still a musher on the trail. Again this year, Billy’s and the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon will revive the tradition of lighting and hanging a red lantern as darkness sets and leave it burning till the last team crosses the finish line. Join us as we warmly welcome all teams in a festive and fun atmosphere.
