John
Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon
The
John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon is considered one of the most prestigious
sled dog race in the lower 48 States, attracting mushers and spectators
from around the world including many from the United States, Canada
& Europe. It’s one of the longest races outside Alaska, covering
nearly 400 miles of difficult terrain.
The event
kicks off in Duluth, Minnesota the last weekend in January. Over 4,000
spectators will gather in Duluth to view this spectacular event and
as many as thirty teams with up to twelve dogs each will test their
skills against this grueling course.
Teams, Veterinarians
and Judges arrive early in the week to test conditions and prepare for
the climate of Northeastern Minnesota’s harsh winter. It is difficult
to predict race conditions, and successful mushers train rigorously
to adapt to the unpredictable demands of the Beargrease.
The established marathon course covers extensive ground along one of
America’s most beautiful scenic shorelines. Bold, rocky cliffs,
provide competitors with a constant reminder of the challenges to be
faced in this highly competitive and physically demanding race.
Although the physical landscape is an extreme obstacle, the weather
provides a greater concern, taxing competitors with the potential of
sub zero temperatures throughout the week long event. Nature’s
dominance in this region reigns first and foremost in the minds of the
participants as they compete against some of the nation’s leading
mushers.
